And all the while you are on the wall, guarding your life and those you love, you must observe complete silence and keep your gun at the ready. What if those same aliens "harvested" your father and friends? Damn, I don't know if I could.I enjoyed this book. The idea of aliens harvesting humans may not be new but the way this author presents this story is fresh and alive. This book takes a much more personal look at the people with intelligent and emotional interactions. You, as the reader, will feel those emotions.
There are plenty of twists in this story which will keep you flipping the pages. I look forward to the next book in this series.

This book got me from the very beginning. The story centers on a young woman living with other survivors after an alien invasion. The action begins immediately and really doesn't stop until the last page. I read the entire book in one go and am waiting very impatiently for the next installment.
Imagine living a world torn apart by an alien invasion. Being a survivor scared of the nightfall and what is beyond the safety of the walls. This book is about an apocalypse like no other. Families torn apart, trying to live a normal life when normal no longer exists. Very good book.
The book was slow and a bit disjointed.
The story idea was interesting, but the pace, plus apparent contradictions, killed it. I read all the way to the end, but I'm not interested in reading any more by this author.
I enjoyed the book and had trouble putting it down until the non-ending. I hate cliffhangers and avoid them if I am aware that they are. It's a good story and well written so if cliffhangers don't bother you then I recommend it.
A very nice read and I totally enjoyed it ! Good science fiction . Nice pace and exciting to read ! Humans verses the aliens , a small group survives . One lone girl has a connection to Them . The only possible way for them to survive is to let her talk to them . After many losses and trials , two girls fight to maintain a small life .. the next book should be just as exciting to find out what happens . Between the harvesters ,coyotes and a handful of humans .

I definitely don't regret reading "When They Came" and will likely delve into Mr. Boye's other literary offerings without much, if any hesitation. My only real qualms would be the lack of tension, I suppose. I never quite got the "Oh my God" moment I was hoping for, that moment where I was watching the clock to see how much I could read before I was late for work. Mr. Boye did a reasonable job getting me interested. This book simply lacks a stranglehold. I don't regret reading it. I just never quite hit that wide-eyed gasp.
When They Came is the first book. Even after reading the prequel, I was caught off guard by the devastating way of life the survivors must now endure, several years after the initial Harvesting. Although he is only a supporting character, readers do find out what happened to Jason, as well as Henshaw.
The main character, Ana Mia, has decided to join the Midnight Guard, to protect Fort Hope. Unfortunately, she is injured while on duty and soon realizes the walls will no longer keep them safe. The invasion and harvesting is only the first stage...the dead appear to be the lucky ones.
Kody Boye has created an unusual post-apocalypse soaked in bloody suspense and twisted into a dystopian mystery. With three known alien species and no explanation for their actions, readers can only guess what new hell awaits Ana and her loved ones. The survivors are a mix of civilians and military, as well as the Midnight Guard, scavengers and bandits, with everyone fighting for the scraps of civilization.
I can't wait to continue this series...
