Having been to Guensey a few times you soon understand that despite it being a world financial centre, the place is actually pretty quiet, dare I say boring. With many non-Guerns occupying the island for job and tax reasons only, it is no wonder that people get bored and some get a little footloose and fancy free. This book captures it all perfectly from the snobbery of the entrenched social sets to the hazards of driving and the bored behaviour of the local teens. All this is the background to a delightful read about a couple who arrive on the island and then discover that life there is not all that was hoped for. Each in their own way learn to discover a lot more about themselves. And the novel, which is actually comedic, delves quite seriously into the fate that awaits those who are approaching retirement or singleness without careful planning or thought, like moving to an isolated seemingly idyllic outpost for all the wrong reasons. There are both very funny elements here but always tinged with a little sadness about a life that is not always fair. Like the other reviewer I found myself caught up with the story and knocked the book over in one day. Recommended as a gift for those in their late 50's who may be contemplating some major life changes!!!Product details

Out of the Game Mary J Goodyear 9780957081185 Books Reviews
A tale of a respectable but dysfunctional family with Dad (George) struggling to adjust to retirement, a loss of libido and hopeless chauvinism, long suffering Mum (Eileen) and their daughter Celia, socialist, overweight and unwilling to change to find the partner she wants so much. New neighbours arrive (Steve and Gloria) and to George's delight Gloria is his Playboy centrefold made flesh and blood and willing to come out and play.
A cautionary (and action packed) tale ensues. This is a real page turner, finish in a couple of days book. Lots of insight and entertainment about our foolish ways. Quite a lot of laughs. Good for a holiday read, especially if you are holidaying in Guernsey where the action takes place.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. (409 Pages)
This story of a recently retired English couple now living in Guernsey started off deceptively slowly. The couple's lives initially seemed quite ordinary but this was soon to change with the advent of new neighbours. Life on the island becomes anything but dull. Coupled with the almost bizarre experiences of their thirty-something, London based daughter, I began to turn the pages with real delight at the author's descriptions and her clear insights into human behaviour. As the plot became more complex - involving death and deceit - I was forced to keep reading into the small hours. A very rewarding read and I look forward to Mary Goodyears' next novel with real anticipation.
